Biotech sues over release of confidential information in online forum

Vancouver’s Angiotech Pharmaceuticals Inc. is suing a John Doe nicknamed writedown600 and two other unnamed individuals after confidential information about the biotech company was posted in an Internet discussion forum on Yahoo! Finance.

According to the endorsement filed in B.C. Supreme Court on Nov. 27, the defendants wrongfully disclosed Angiotech’s confidential information, including information about its financial affairs, strategies and plans, in a public Internet discussion forum commencing November 12, 2008.

Angiotech is seeking damages for breach of confidence, civil conspiracy, breach of contract, inducing breach of contract, unlawful interference with its economic interests, breach of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, fraudulent misrepresentation and negligent misrepresentation.

It is also seeking an order, a declaration and injunctions as well as an accounting and damages.

A statement of defence had not been filed by press time.
