The federal government is providing a new loan program for agriculture producers and agribusiness operators looking to produce their own renewable energy.

The energy loan offered by Farm Credit Canada will be available March 1 and will help finance producers and agribusiness operators interested in purchasing and installing on-farm energy sources like biogas, geo-thermal, wind or solar power.

The loan offers an interest term of up to five years at variable or fixed rates and with monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual payment options available.

A recent survey showed that 60% of farmers are considering new ways to find financial value in reducing their environmental impact.

More than a third of respondents said they are looking to reduce their environmental impact by using renewable energy sources.
