“Self-healing” computer application thwarts attempts to disable theft countermeasures Print E-mail

Vancouver’s Absolute Software Corp. (TSX:ABT) has incorporated an application into its computer lifecycle managing system that allows computers to “self-heal” in the event they are tampered with by users or thieves.

Absolute’s lifecycle manager, dubbed Absolute Manage, allows IT staff to maintain and monitor internal computer functions such as applications and licenses, security configurations and power-saving measures from a single interface.

Absolute cited a Info-Tech Research Group survey of IT professionals in mid-to-large-sized organizations that showed traditional IT asset management technology is vulnerable to tampering.

According to Absolute: “Approximately 28% of the time, the critical discovery agent installed on computers is disabled – effectively rendering it unreachable for IT staff tasked with managing it.”

With the new application, Absolute Manage will automatically reinstall in the event it is removed or disabled on a computer equipped with the application.

The company said the technology behind the application could survive operating system re-installations as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging.
